Couples Therapy

Online Couples Therapy

Couples therapy (also called marital psychotherapy) is a process dedicated to people who are married or in a partnership, going through difficulties. It consists of a series of online meetings lasting 60 minutes and is led by a qualified therapist. The goal of couples therapy is to improve the quality of the relationship, understand mutual needs and emotions, and develop skills such as healthy communication.

Why should I try couples therapy?

No one has a conflict-free marriage or relationship with perfect communication. It’s not possible. But even if a couple is struggling with what seems like insurmountable difficulties, couples therapy can help individuals reconnect and build a more balanced relationship in which empathy and compromise are possible. Learning the skills of conflict resolution is a big part of this process, and can be learned and practiced throughout therapy. Quite often, couples who come to therapy have already hurt each other, and one of the goals of therapy is to learn to heal that pain. The goal of therapy is also to understand how the people in the couple hurt each other, how to prevent future harm, and how to make things better when the harm is done again.

How to prepare for your first online couples therapy session?

Preparing for your first couples therapy session mainly involves preparing your heart and head to be attentive. All you need to do is show up and be open to the experience, approach it with curiosity, while being open to the words of your partner or therapist. Couples show up exactly when they need it, when both are ready. They are led to do so by emotions, although not always pleasant ones, they are the motivator to take action. It is also good to have some idea of your goals – individual and relationship. The therapist’s task is to examine the area that requires the most attention and then guide you through the process of change.

What is the role of a therapist during couples therapy?

  • creates a safe and supportive environment in which partners can talk openly and work constructively on their relationship
  • works with partners to help them identify and understand the factors influencing problems in their relationship
  • helps partners develop communication skills, solve problems and establish an emotional bond

How does the online couples psychotherapy process work?

During the first sessions, we talk about the difficulties you report, everyday problems in which you need support. On this basis, we initially identify the areas we will work on. In the next steps, we decide how further cooperation will proceed – we talk about the format of meetings, the duration of therapy and the aspects you want to focus on first.
